Ice Hotels

This index lists a single ice hotel, and does so deliberately. Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi is the most established of its kind, and one honest entry serves readers better than a rotating list.

Icehotel

Every spring, blocks of ice are cut from the Torne River and stored. Every winter, they become a hotel. Icehotel, in the village of Jukkasjärvi in Swedish Lapland, has repeated this cycle since the early 1990s, and no other ice hotel has done it as long.

Artists and designers from around the world apply to create the art suites, so each season's building is different from the last. Sleeping happens at sub-zero temperatures in thermal sleeping bags on beds of ice, with warm rooms and saunas nearby for the rest of the stay. A permanent building, Icehotel 365, keeps ice suites and an ice bar open through the summer using solar-powered cooling.

Winter brings dog sledding, snowmobile trips and a real chance of northern lights. Summer offers midnight sun and the river running free again, with the next season's ice waiting upstream.
